The inspiration for "Blame It" (also known as "Blame It (On the Alcohol)") came to Nate Walka (born Nathan L. Walker) while he was on the phone with his grandmother. She was complaining about his uncle, who liked to drink and would blame alcohol for his actions. Walka said, "That's when the idea of the song came to me... I started googling to see if anyone had come up with a song about this, and didn't find anything, so I came up with the hook and the rest just unfolded."
Walka grew up in an artistic and musical household in Whitehaven, Memphis, Tennessee. His mother worked in real estate and was a professional artist, while his father was a visual artist. Both his uncle and sister sang, and Walka himself sang gospel songs in the choir. He developed a passion for writing at an early age, and his mother entered him into literary competitions, where he won several international poetry awards.
In 2007, Walka dropped out of college and moved to Carmel, Indiana, to help his sister, who had just given birth to his first niece.
